Goblet of Fire & fun with photoshop, again

The new Harry Potter movie was good. I don’t care that some sections were trimmed to the basics (the entire World Cup section was reduced to an introduction of the Port Key concept, Krum and the Death Eaters) and that others were omitted entirely (good riddance to Winky and S.P.E.W), because I could see that they did the wise thing: sticking to the stuff that was important to the basic plot. Except the ball, but that one at least advanced the relationships and was kind of fun. In fact, I was surprised that they didn’t devote at least another two or three minutes to Harry’s jealousy of Cho and Cedric, but that’s okay. Anyway, the movie was enjoyable. I was really sad when XXX died, again. Funny, but I cared about it more than I did about the death in book 5. The actor didn't help, he was cuuuute.

Ahem. In other news, just when I thought I’d leave that story alone forever, Advent Children images tempted me and I began doing new images for the chapter titles. Hey, I haven’t wasted my time on Photoshop for a while, so it’s about time. Here’s some of the ones I already did, for chapters 1-6.

AC is really good on Reno & Rude, which is great for this story, but sparse on Aerith. And no Rufus. It leaves me in a bit of a bind for the rest of the chapters.

Mmmphh also I’ve finally embarked on my second playthrough of FF7, after 8 years. Fun in Legoland!

The actor playing Cedric was just adorable, it really made Movie!Ron! seem even more unattractive than before.

Seriously. I must be a very shallow person because I don't know how Hermione could be given the choice of Krum and Ron and choose Ron.

I even felt this way in the books, ditto in the movie.

And choosing Krum over Ron isn't shallow. It's preceptive.

And Ron really has no marketable skills. He's a crappy wizard. At least Krum's going to make an ass load of money playing Quidditch.

However, on an intellectual level neither are at all close to Hermione. She would grow so bored with them. Neither would provide her with any challenge.

I was surprised that they didn’t devote at least another two or three minutes to Harry’s jealousy of Cho and Cedric, but that’s okay.

I thought the same thing. After the ball, the filmmakers could have at least established that Cedric and Cho were now a serious item. That would have better explained her reaction at the end and set up the problems for the eventual Harry/Cho relationship.

because I could see that they did the wise thing: sticking to the stuff that was important to the basic plot.

I thought they did a really good job whittling down the plot. There were some things that I missed, such as Percy Weasley, the madness of Mr. Crouch, the introduction of Bellatrix Lestrange, Snape showing his Dark Mark to Fudge, Dumbledore telling Harry about Neville's parents, more Rita Skeeter. But overall, the filmmakers left in what needed to be left in and ridded themselves of the excess plot. Although they could have given Fleur and Krum more than two lines each.

I also appreciated how they condensed the graveyard scene and Harry's final scene with Dumbledore. I hate how JK Rowling goes on and on for pages and pages. I always end up annoyed and confused. In the movie, I actually understood what was going on.

I was really sad when XXX died, again.

The death didn't much affect me when I read it, but in the movie it did. When Harry brings XXX back...that was absolutely heartbreaking. That was actually one of my favorite scenes. Everyone's reactions were very real.

That was actually one of my favorite scenes. Everyone's reactions were very real.

The cast did such a fantastic job on it, no hammy faces or silly looks like they favored in the first 3 movies. The reaction of Cedric's father was so heartbreaking.

Seriously. I must be a very shallow person because I don't know how Hermione could be given the choice of Krum and Ron and choose Ron.

If your shallow then so am I. Krum may not have been an intellectual but neither is Ron freaking Weasley! At least Krum is very easy on the eyes. Ron is like the poster child for abstinence.

Ron is like the poster child for abstinence.

That is very cruel. And correct.

Ron's cool and umm a red head. So he's... cool. Ok, I've got nothing. I haven't read the books, but the loser in me wanted Ron to get to take Hermione to the ball. But then, by the end of the scene, I felt bad for the Patel sisters more than anything.

Basically, the one trait to recommend Ron is his fierce loyalty and bravery. He gets livid and ends up doing something stupid whenever Hermione's honor is insulted, for example.

Unfortunately none of that intensity makes it to Movie Ron, who comes across as a dopey, medicated ass.

BookRon is definitely better than movieRon, but I feel that both he and Harry are pretty 2-dimensional characters. We can say Ron's loyal and brave because, well, he's a good guy and that's what good guys are like. Hermoine's like that as well, but she has other personality traits as well.

Speaking of movie versions, Emma Watson is much better than the boys.

I think that the death was effective, though, because you know more about the character from the book. In the movie he gets some screen time, but not too much. But combined with the book and the actor's appeal, it works.

And ditto about Harry/Cho. I thought they should have made it a bit clearer in preparation for book 5.

Speaking of book 5, I don't evny those who need to turn that mess into a movie. Luna's one of the few really good things about it.

Seriously. I can't imagine how they'll condense it into a coherent plot. I predict it will be sucktastic.

You know, I would have thought the same thing about this one (which you gotta admit was way too sprawly for its own good, in book version). I rather liked their method of just skipping over most of the nonsense without even a cursory nod. It works, in movie-logic-land.

In some ways this is true, but the plot for book 4 is more focused than book 5's plot, when you come down to it. The subplots are all well-defined episodes (World Cup, Triwizard Tournament, S.P.E.W), and are tied by the malefactor identity master plot. So it was easy to strip it down to the basics. While there was a lot going on, it's easy to define each subplot and get rid of those that didn't work (like S.P.E.W) while condensing the irrelevant ones (World Cup) to the relevant basics.

Book 5 doesn't seem to have such a well-defined drive, so I think it would be much harder to focus it. And the plots that do go on just aren't that good, at least in my opinion. I find Umridge dull, Harry’s suspicion of Dumbledore irritating, Sirius a little disappointing, and Cho/Harry not particularly interesting. None of the new characters left any impression, either.

What can I say? I found book 5 disappointing.
